Former Dallas Cowboys player Marion Barber III found dead in Frisco

Former Dallas Cowboys running back Marion Barber III

who scored a host of touchdowns without ever having a 1,000-yard season

has died, the team said Wednesday. He was 38 years old.

Barber appeared in his final season with Chicago in 2011 after spending six years with the Cowboys.

He had mental health problems after his retirement.

Police in Frisco, a Dallas suburb, said Wednesday they conducted a welfare search of an apartment

that Barber appears to be renting, investigating an unreported death.

The Frisco-based Cowboys said they "were heartbroken by the tragic death of Marion Barber III."

Marion was an old-guard, aggressive player who ran for the win on every play," the team said.
